Climate crisis - letter to my MP
Today I wrote to my MP (Jonathan Lord) - this is what I wrote…
Dear Jonathan,
I hope you’re well and enjoying the summer.
I don’t know about you but yesterday’s report by the IPCC has provoked all sorts of emotions in me, including fear and panic at what we’re facing as well as feeling overwhelmed at the size and complexity of the task ahead of us.
That said, I’m a problem solver at heart and so I’m working on how I can play a part in tackling the crisis. In part, I’m doing this through my Woking-based consultancy business, which helps business leaders know what steps to take to build a responsible business that is about more than profit – balancing people, planet and profit. And I’m now writing to you as your support within Woking and within Parliament could have a big impact.
I would love to know that you are doing everything within your power to support policies and actions that:
Promote investment in activities that will accelerate our response to the climate crisis
Remove all incentives to invest or engage in activities that contribute to the climate crisis
Encourage behaviour change at an individual level
Hopefully this previous list is the sort of thing you are hearing from across our constituency.
There are two other things I’d like to add that I’m particularly passionate about and which are less spoken about – and both of which would make a significant difference to the rate at which we are able to bring about change.
Diversification of the COP26 leadership team to ensure an equal number of women to men at the top decision-making levels (see this website for more information).
Encouraging R&D and innovation which is collaborative and transparent – and putting in place policies that promote this. Yes, competition can really spur on innovation - but in this instance we have a big shared burning (literally) platform to spur us on. We need to learn together and share everything that we learn and discover so that we can accelerate the change collaboratively. A great example of this is innocent’s carbon-neutral factory – innocent are sharing everything they’ve learnt with anyone who wants to hear about it, helping other companies (including competitors) go carbon neutral too.
Please can I also ask you to support the Better Business Act.
I’d love to have the opportunity to discuss this with you further.
With very best wishes.
Yours sincerely,
Hannah Keartland
