Ecologi - 2022 impact report review

This week’s review is from Ecologi, an organisation that many other businesses rely on to deliver their own impact.

👍🏻 3 things I like...

1. RECOGNISE THEY DON’T KNOW EVERYTHING

They recognise they don’t know everything and so have established the Ecologi Climate Committee. This is an external group of experts to guide their impact-related decision-making. They grew and diversified the Committee during the year so it’s not 20 strong.

2. FOCUS ON REDUCING EMISSIONS

Lots of similar businesses to Ecologi seem to focus on selling carbon credits but not supporting with emissions reduction. I like that Ecologi has a strategic focus on delivering “deep permanent emissions reductions”.

They’ve launched their free tool Ecologi Zero to help with this, demonstrating that they’re taking meaningful action against this objective.

3. INDEPENDENT DUE DILIGENCE

They work with third party, independent partners provide independent assessment of projects they invest in.

❓3 questions it raises

1. WHAT WERE THEIR OBJECTIVES?

What were their objectives for the year? How did they do against them? How does what they’ve done and achieved in the year link to these objectives?

I’d also like to see SMART objectives for the next year so it’s easy to measure progress against these in the next impact report.

2. HOW DO THEY USE DATA TO INFORM DECISIONS?

How do they decide between different projects and know that the projects they’re investing maximise impact?

It would be helpful to see how data informs their decision making about what to fund / prioritise.

3. WHAT ABOUT THEIR OWN OPERATIONS?

The focus of the report is on the services they provide. I’d like to understand the impact (positive and negative) of their own operations.

E.g. their own carbon footprint and associated reduction plan; how they treat their employees; an analysis of their supply chain.
