Honest Mobile - 2021 impact report review
The impact report under the spotlight this week is from Honest Mobile...
👍🏻 3 things I like...
1. CLEAR UPFRONT ON WHAT THEY’RE ALL ABOUT
At the very beginning of their report they write “by 2040 communication technology will account for 14% of the global environmental footprint. Making it possible for people to switch their utilities to sustainable alternatives adds up to make a big difference.”
There’s no question about why they exist and the difference they want to make. I can imagine this gives them clarity about where to focus their efforts and what decisions to make.
2. TRANSPARENCY
They provide a link through to their detailed carbon emissions analysis report. I love this level of transparency and, as I read it, I reflected how this level of transparency could help educate their stakeholders.
3. THEY’VE ACHIEVED A LOT FOR A YOUNG COMPANY
Honest Mobile has only been around for 4 years and have achieved a lot in that time, challenging an established market and way of doing things. They’ve embedded ‘doing good’ into what they do and how they do it.
❓3 questions it raises
1. HOW MIGHT THEY MOVE BEYOND OFFSETTING?
Even though they’re trying to make their offsetting portfolio as permanent as possible, I’m concerned about their reliance on offsetting as an approach. How might they move beyond this?
NB this isn't to belittle some of the seemingly obvious but impactful things they've done (the best ideas are often the obvious ones!) like moving to 50% smaller SIM inserts to reduce single-use plastic. I love this!
2. WHAT COULD OTHER BUSINESSES LEARN FROM THEIR EMISSIONS ANALYSIS?
They have a good understanding of emissions across their whole value chain, including areas that go beyond normal definitions of scope 3. What could other businesses learn from them?
3. WHAT CHALLENGES WILL THEY FACE AS THEY SCALE?
Honest Mobile are lucky that they’ve embedded good into their operational processes from the start.
They're still pretty small and I wonder what will happen as they scale. What challenges will they face as they look to retain ‘doing good’ at their core? What will become harder?
