BKL - 2024 impact report review
I’ve known and worked with the team at B Corp accountancy firm BKL for several years and so I enjoyed reading their latest impact report and seeing lots of familiar faces smiling back at me!
👍🏻 Three things I like:
1. OPEN & HONEST
The report comes across as open and honest. For example, throughout the report there are “transparency check” boxes which highlight learnings, things that didn’t work out as expected or areas where they haven’t made the progress they had planned. I like how these are highlighted rather than hidden away.
And in each section of the report they have a section on “challenges and learnings”.
2. VERY HUMAN
They talk about being “people first” and this shines through in the report. The report is full of photos of BKL’s team and many of them are quoted throughout the report. There is also a page called “the people behind the impact”. Overall, the whole report feels very human and warm – lots of smiley welcoming faces!
3. USING DATA TO PROMPT LEADERSHIP DISCUSSIONS
They talk about increasing the frequency of carbon reporting and this ensuring that sustainability remains “at the forefront of leadership
❓Three questions it raises:
1. WHY DIDN’T THEY REPORT PROGRESS ON LAST YEAR’S OBJECTIVES?
In their previous impact report, BKL set objectives for the following year. I’m curious to know why this impact report didn’t refer back to those and report progress against them.
2. HOW DO THEIR SCOPE 3 EMISSIONS BREAK DOWN?
As with most service-based businesses, scope 3 emissions are by far the largest proportion of their carbon footprint. I was curious to know how this is broken down, what the most material emissions categories are and the specific actions they are taking to address these.
3. WHAT WAS THE UPTAKE & IMPACT OF VOLUNTEERING DAYS?
In the report, they say, “We introduced two paid volunteering days annually for each employee, encouraging our team to give back to their communities.”
I’m curious to know how many employees actually took advantage of these volunteering days, what volunteering did they do and what difference did it make?
