Hotelplan UK - 2025 Planet & People report review
The Hotelplan UK impact report was recommended to me and I’m glad it was - I’ve very much enjoyed reading it and learning about a new business and sector.
👍🏻 Three things I like:
1. TRANSPARENT ABOUT INDUSTRY CHALLENGES
They are open and honest about the challenges to the travel industry of becoming more sustainable (environmentally and social inclusion). They don’t shy away from talking about these.
In the very first paragraph they share that the bulk of their emissions are from flying. They then have a section of the report dedicated to this and get specific about the actions they’re taking. They also have a section on Industry Challenges and share the need to collaborate across the industry to make progress.
2. CATALYTIC QUESTIONS RE INDUSTRY CHALLENGES
They pose some big provocative questions related to industry challenges. For example:
“How do we continually create lower impact holidays with no risk to the price or experience for our customers?”
That’s the sort of question that could spark some interesting innovation – it has a good balance of constraints and freedom for creativity.
3. ASK IF THEIR ACTIONS AND WORDS ARE ALIGNED
They asked their team if their commitment to the environment is apparent in actions as well as words. I love that they’re asking their team this question – how many businesses do? It shows a level of vulnerability.
And a bonus one – I really like their “Bias Disclosure” and haven’t seen a company do this before. Here it is :
❓Three questions it raises:
1. WHAT SPECIFIC POSITIVE IMPACT DO THEY WANT TO HAVE?
I can’t disagree with this statement at the very beginning of the report:
“We need to create a future that benefits all, through equitable economic growth, social justice and environmental stability”
But what is their specific focus in terms of the positive impact they want to have? And what’s their strategy for delivering this? Do they have a Theory of Change?
2. WHAT’S THEIR INVESTMENT IN INDUSTRY CHALLENGE QUESTIONS?
I’ve said it already – I love their “industry challenge questions”. I’m curious to know how they are investing time and money in exploring these, testing and developing solutions. How is this integrated into their business strategy and priorities?
3. HOW DO THEY DECIDE WHICH CHARITIES TO SUPPORT?
They donate to charity in a number of ways and support a range of projects all over the world. I’m curious to know how they decide what to fund, especially the Explore Fund donations? What are their strategic objectives for their charitable donations?
